Remembering the tsunami
|Ceremonies will be held in many Indian Ocean nations today to commemorate the first anniversary of the December 26 tsunami.|
A magnitude 9.3 earthquake ripped apart the sea floor off the coast of north-west Sumatra in Indonesia exactly one year ago today.
The quake triggered a devastating tsunami, which travelled thousands of kilometres across the Indian Ocean.
More than 200,000 people were killed in countries as far apart as Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, the Maldives and Somalia.
Most of those killed in the tsunami were from the Indonesian province of Aceh.
